Kettleshulme St James Primary School Case Study
Earth Cubs Curriculum Integration!
Kettleshulme St James is located in the Peak District, Derbyshire. A smaller than average primary school with three classes. Staff at Kettleshulme St James, wanted to use Earth Cubs content to create a global citizenship programme, which would also utilise the uniqueness of the school’s location, and encourage children to take action within their wider community.
The Process
Staff Meeting
Teachers used their staff meeting time to become familiar with the Earth Cubs platform. They reviewed their existing curriculum, thinking about what environmental learning their students had already engaged with. The team considered their community's unique strengths and identified areas that required further attention.
In this process of self-assessment and programme planning, the teaching staff collectively chose to embark on Pathway 3. This particular pathway places a strong emphasis on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the celebration of Global Days. Placing a ‘BIG QUESTION’ at the forefront of all learning, they wanted their children to have a deeper understanding of the world's interconnectedness and their roles in achieving a sustainable future.
Kettleshulme Primary decided to focus on the BIG question: Are we all equal? Linking with Global Goal 10 Reduced Inequalities.
“We wanted Earth Cubs to fit into our existing curriculum but in a way that wouldn’t give staff any extra work load. Following pathway 3 meant we could utilise our assembly time, introduce critical thinking around the Global Goals, global days and fit the learning in where we saw best. Teachers could pick the resources on the Earth Cubs site that were related to that topic.”

Launch Assembly
A member of the Earth Cubs team came to launch Kettleshulme Primary's Global Citizenship programme. Kelly told the children about how the programme would work and really got them excited. Children were asked about their ideas, they were shown the Earth Cubs bulletin board where work would be displayed each week.

Key vocabulary was introduced on the bulletin board and reinforced during every school assembly that month.
What is an Earth Cub?
What is a Global Citizen?
What are the Global Goals?
Celebration Assembly
Over the course of a month, children worked on their BIG question in assemblies and in class, answering the BIG question: Are we all equal? Using Earth Cubs lessons, presentations and activities to support them (see above planning).
Here are some celebration assembly photos!

During the celebration assembly, the children were asked whether they thought it was important to learn about the Global Goals, work towards a school BIG question and learn about global citizenship.
'Equality isn't something I think about on a daily basis, it's something very important children need to learn, so everyone does feel equal and knows how to treat people the same.' Dora Year 6 'Everyone should have a voice.' Oscar Year 5 'The Earth Cubs resources made it very easy to tackle the subject. The Equality powerpoint helped kids to think about different viewpoints. I easily slotted this learning around and in the children's other learning. Usually we fit it into PSHE.' Mrs Sandres Year 5/6 Teacher 'The children in my class were really motivated to learn. The Earth Cubs resources had everything there for me to dip into. The children completed their work during curriculum time. There are lots of PHSE and Literacy links!' Mrs James Year 3/4 Teacher
