People visiting the reefs can hurt them accidentally by standing on them, touching them, or bumping into them with their boats.
Climate change
Climate change is one of corals biggest threats.
Coral can’t survive in water that has too much pollution, is too warm or too acidic.
Coral bleeching
Algae is a living thing - it looks like a plant! Coral eats algae and that’s what makes it so beautiful and colourful.
Too much pollution causes algae to leave the coral. When algae leaves the coral it turns white, it can become sick and even die.
Overfishing
Reef fisheries are very important to many communities.
Sometimes too many fish are taken from the sea. This is called overfishing.
Taking too many fish away means everything in the sea is out of balance.
Fishing nets
Traps, nets and fishing lines can hurt coral reefs and it takes them a long time to recover.
Marine animals can get caught in fishing nets.
