Make Cold Art

Use different materials to make an icy collage! You'll be amazed at what amazing arctic landscape you'll come up with!

Make an Icy Arctic Collage With Cold Colours

Make Cold Art is a hands-on making project where children build an icy collage of an Arctic landscape. They start by mixing black, white and blue paint into cold colours, then dip bubble wrap into the paint and stamp it onto the page. Next comes the fun of experimenting: ripping eco foil, adding blue eco glitter and pressing on cotton wool until the picture looks properly frosty. Arctic photos are there to look at for ideas, and when the last bit of sparkle is added, the icy art is ready.

Along the way, children think about what the Arctic looks like and which colours and textures feel cold. Blues, whites and shimmery foil make a good match for ice and snow. The project also links to Climate Action, giving children a gentle first way into caring about icy places far from home.

For parents and teachers, this works well as a calm craft session at home or in the classroom. Before you begin, look at the Arctic photos together and ask: What colours can you see? Which material looks most like ice? Which looks like snow? Afterwards, children can describe their collage to a friend, or you can talk about why we want to keep cold places cold. It suits the 3-7 age group, and older children in the 7-11 range can add more detail and layers.
