Climate Change in the Arctic

Learn about the effects of climate change in the Arctic and on the planet.

Climate Change in the Arctic

What do you think has happened in these photos?

What is Climate Change?

Climate Change is the changing of weather patterns over a number of years.

The planet is getting hotter

This is because of the things humans are doing every day.

This puts all life and the planet at risk.

Increased greenhouse gases means the planet is having more extreme weather

More droughts, rising sea levels, forest fires, hotter temperatures, flooding and storms.

Hotter temperatures means warmer air and warmer oceans.

This affects local people and ecosystems AND the whole planet!

The Arctic is very important to the global climate.

Permafrost is melting.
 Glaciers are receding.
 Sea ice is melting.
 Sea levels are rising.

Vegetation

Rising temperatures mean more crops will grow in the Arctic.

The growing season will be longer. This will create problems with insects, weeds and diseases to vegetation.

This has an impact on the Arctic ecosystems.

Animals

Arctic animals like polar bears, seals and walruses need the sea ice to hunt!

Loss of vegetation has an impact on animals that feed on it.

This will have an affect on the food chain including humans that depend on these animals.

Freshwater ecosystems will be affected by increasing water temperatures.

People

Indigenous communities whose traditions and cultures are created around the Arctic environment face many challenges because of climate change.

Communities may have to relocate away from their Arctic homes.

How do changes in the Arctic affect the planet?

More rain and melting ice will have an impact on ocean currents.

Ecosystems will change.

Species will become endangered or extinct.

Arctic food resources will be harder to get e.g. fish.

Sea levels rising means islands will disappear.

Research Challenge

• Can you find out more about climate change in the Arctic?

• How will you present your learning?

• Create a PowerPoint Presentation

• Use all the information you have learned so far. Research 2 new facts!

• Visit the Arctic WWF website

Global Goals

There are 17 things to do on the Global Goals list!
Earth Cubs look care about climate change.

How can you help climate change where you live?

Be a Planet Saver!

How can we use less water?

• Review how much water your school uses.

• Identity ways you could reduce water usage.

• Make posters to spread the message.

• How can you record your learning in an eco-friendly way?
