What is Wind Power?

Learn about Wind Power and how wind turbines work!

How Wind Power and Wind Turbines Work

This classroom presentation answers the question "What is wind power?" in simple steps. Children find out that wind is moving air: warm air pushes up through cooler air, and the bigger the temperature difference, the faster the wind blows. They then see how wind turbines, like modern windmills, turn that moving air into electricity, and how it travels through a transformer and the National Grid to homes, schools and businesses.

The presentation also explains why wind is a renewable energy source that can't be used up, and compares offshore and onshore wind farms. It looks at advantages, such as affordability and farmers still being able to use their land, and at disadvantages, including risks to birds and the fact that wind isn't always reliable. A fun fact about why turbines are painted white or pale grey, and a look at under-sea cables that share clean energy with other countries, keep it lively.

For teachers and parents, the presentation suggests a ready-made discussion: hold a class vote on whether wind farms are a good source of renewable energy, and ask whether there are more advantages than disadvantages. You could also ask, "Have you ever seen a wind farm?" On your next journey, challenge children to spot as many wind turbines as they can, and talk about helping the planet by walking, scooting or riding a bike.
