Back to School: Eco-Friendly Tips for a Greener Year

Michelle Parkes ·

Summer is zipping by, and here we are, gearing up for another school year. Whether you're a student, a parent, or just someone who loves that fresh-start vibe September brings, there's something super exciting about new beginnings. But before we dive headfirst into the flurry of buying notebooks and organising our backpacks, let’s pause for a sec. This year, why not make back-to-school a little more eco-friendly? After all, going green is in!

1. Recycle, Repurpose, Reuse

Let’s kick things off with a classic: recycle, repurpose, and reuse. Do you really need a new set of notebooks, or could last year’s still have some pages left? That half-used binder? Still good to go! Before you buy anything new, take a good look at what you already have. Not only will this save you money, but it’s also a great way to reduce waste. Plus, there’s something oddly satisfying about filling up those last few pages of an old notebook.

2. Shop Second-Hand

Secondhand stores and online marketplaces are goldmines for back-to-school supplies. From gently-used backpacks to barely-worn uniforms, you can find almost everything second-hand. It's like a treasure hunt! And, by choosing second-hand, you're giving those items a second life and keeping them out of the landfill.

3. Choose Sustainable Supplies

When it’s time to buy new, look for eco-friendly alternatives. Opt for notebooks made from recycled paper, pens made from biodegradable materials, or reusable lunch containers instead of single-use plastic bags. There are so many cool, sustainable products out there nowadays—just a quick search online, and you’ll find everything from bamboo rulers to recycled pencils.

4. Pack a Waste-Free Lunch

Speaking of lunch, let’s talk waste-free meals. Ditch the disposable wrappers and plastic bottles. Instead, pack your lunch in reusable containers, and carry drinks in a stainless steel water bottle. Got leftovers? Use beeswax wraps instead of cling film—they’re reusable, compostable, and they come in all sorts of cute patterns!

5. Walk or Bike

Transportation is a biggie when it comes to your carbon footprint. If possible, walk or bike to school—it's great exercise and reduces emissions. If walking or biking isn’t an option, consider carpooling with friends or taking public transportation. Fewer cars on the road mean less pollution, and carpooling is a fun way to catch up with friends before the school day starts.

6. Get Involved

Finally, why not take your eco-friendly efforts to the next level by getting involved with school initiatives? Join or start an environmental club, organise a school-wide recycling program, or lead a campaign to reduce single-use plastics in the cafeteria. Every small action counts, and who knows? You might inspire others to join the green movement, too.

Catch you later, and happy back-to-school season! 🎒✏️
