5 low waste activities for children

Michelle Parkes ·

Muddy Puddles are on a mission to connect growing explorers with nature by making clothes that protects them in all weathers and is kind to our planet. They are built on the proposition that there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong kit!

At Muddy Puddles, they believe you don’t need to spend a huge amount or go far to have a great family day out and so they've put together some low waste activities that you can do with the family. It’s a great introduction to teaching children about the importance of protecting our environment.

1. Go on a family walk

What could be more enjoyable than a walk in the fresh air with the whole family? Try to walk a different route or discover a new area you have never walked before near your home. Keep a look out for wildlife on the way – this is a great introduction into the importance of protecting our environment. Remember to wrap up warm on chillier days and bring plenty of tasty snacks along for the adventure!

2. Scavenger hunt

Planning a scavenger hunt is a simple but super way to keep children engaged with the outdoors. This can be done in the garden or around the local neighbourhood. Create a list of things for your children to find such as different birds, plants, trees or something of a particular colour or texture. Get them to tick off the items as they find them along the way.

3.  Get green fingered

We love a bit of gardening and doing it with your children has lots of benefits from helping them learn a new skill to teaching them more about the food they eat. We think this handy calendar is super useful for showing what to grow and harvest at different times of the year. You could even set up an area of the garden or allotment for your children and allow their creativity to run wild! Perhaps they might grow some fruit and vegetables of their choice or plant wildflower seeds for the bees.

4. Make your own bird feeder

This is a winner all round as it will keep children entertained for an hour or two and make the birds in your garden very happy too! Look for items around the home that you can recycle and turn into a bird feeder such as bottles or empty toilet rolls. Once the bird feeder is hanging up in the garden, it’s a great activity to watch the different species of birds that pay a visit – this RSPB tool is great for identifying different species of birds found in the UK. Earth Cubs has an easy to make bird feeder activity to check out.

5. Have a good old sort out

Ask your children to sort through old toys, books and other unwanted items and donate them to your local charity shop or have a car boot sale – a great way to earn some extra pocket money plus other people will get a huge amount of joy in playing with a new toy or reading a new book.
