Making real world impact
Michelle Parkes ·
At Earth Cubs we firmly believe in making positive planet-saving action. If we all work together in partnership, we can truly action incredible change. Inspiring children at a young age will inspire them to be the green leaders of the future.
We strongly believe in the 4 Cs - Curriculum, Campus. Culture and Community. These form the basis of a whole school approach to environmental learning. To help develop these 4 Cs, we've come up with some incredible examples of impact projects you can use at your school. Designed to excited and inspire young minds!
1. Litter picking club
Equipment - litter pickers, gloves, rubbish bags
Start up by picking up litter on campus. Maybe keep hold of the bag of rubbish to show in assembly and chat through the types of rubbish found.
Think about holding a regular litter picking club at school to make an impact on your local community. You could cover a different route each week and discuss how much positive impact it's having on the local area and wildlife.

2. School veggie garden
Equipment - seeds, recycled materials like plastic bottles, milk cartons, soil
If you have a large enough space, you could use some reclaimed wood to create your own veggie patch and teach the children about growing. Add some wildflowers for the insects and look at different fruit and veg you could grow. Even with a small space, you can use old recycled bottles with the tops cut off to grow food/flowers. They can be sent home as well as used to decorate the playground.

3. School plastic audit/reduction
Equipment - pen and paper!
Get the children to head into the kitchen and do an audit of all the plastic used. For example, plastic water bottles, clingfilm, plastic cartons. Chat about what could be replaced with something more sustainable. Calculate how much plastic could be saved over the year with your new findings!
4. Spread a message
Equipment - paper, pens, paints
Is there a community issue that is causing problems? Cars idling, too much traffic, litter? Get the children to create a campaign to raise awareness and design their own campaign posters. Research ways in which a different could be made to the community. Maybe they also write a letter to their MP.
5. Repair/Swap shop
Equipment - need the children to bring in their own toys to swap or mend. Suggestion to have glue, screwdrivers, needle and thread available.
Hold a regular repair and swap shop. Helping to stop people buying new things and reusing what we have. Get the children involved in either repairing or even repurposing items. Look at incredible organisations that are up cycling old materials, like Elvis and Kresse. What could you repurpose into something new?

6. Create a song or performance
Equipment - potentially musical equipment
You could create an environmental play or even a climate inspired song or rap! Why not perform it in school or even take it to an old people's home to benefit the local community and spread a message of environmental awareness.
