World Water Day
Michelle Parkes ·
I imagine that most of you reading this diary post have an abundance of fresh drinking water. It’s as easy as turning on a tap. We don’t spend much, if any time worrying about water supplies.
It may surprise you to know that 2.2 billion people live without access to fresh, clean water. As climate change continues to impact global populations, this is a huge growing problem.
On this World Water Day, we wanted to highlight some epic charities working in areas where access to fresh water is challenging.
- WaterAid
WaterAid’s aim is that everyone in the world has clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene within a generation. They work in almost 30 different countries to make massive impacts to small communities.
For example one women’s group in Mali producing soap and shea butter gives the women financial independence. For this they need clean water.
- Charity Water
Charity Water has funded almost 60,000 water projects which positively impacts well over 11 million people. They work with local partners operating in the affected areas. Once the construction is finished, it’s not the end of the project. The team will continue to monitor and evaluate to ensure that freshwater is available for years to come.
- Splash
Splash is a social justice organisation focusing on providing safe water for children. They have served over 600,000 kids in 8 countries across Asia and Africa. Project WISE aims to reach 100% of government schools in Addis Ababa and Kolkata. Not only will it bring improved water and sanitation but also include behaviour change programs for kids and adults. They would then like to roll this project out to other cities and countries.

What can you do?
- Why not raise some money for the amazing charities above. This could help to fund a new well or sanitation for a small community
- WaterAid have some great free activities and quizzes you can play to learn more about water
- Make sure you don’t waste water at home. Turn the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth and do clothes washing when you have a full load of clothes
