Follow along as Shane visits the Philippines to meet Jacob and discover his story, why the ocean is an important lifeline for people, and what life is like for his family.
Ask the children to explain what Shane the Shark means by this. Further explain that the world has one global ocean.
Show the world map or Google Earth so children get a visual understanding.
Ask the children if the ocean is interconnected (linked together) and what else is connected. Discuss as a group — mention food webs and human connection with nature.
Ask the children to name, draw or act out how the ocean is important to life (fishing, holidays, relaxing, water is one of human’s basic needs, oxygen).
Playing in the ocean, seeing its beauty, and loving the ocean will make us appreciate it and want to protect it.
Ask the children to share their favourite ocean stories — it might be a visit to the ocean.
Note to be inclusive, open the discussion to other types of natural water sources.
