Hold your horses!
Michelle Parkes ·
It's likely that July 2023 will be not only the hottest July on record, but the hottest month ever recorded. Wildfires have consumed large swarths of Southern Europe and China has recorded its hottest ever temperature. We all know we have climate change to thank for this, with far ranging impacts.
Wildfires are always a constant threat in Spain, made worse by rising temperatures. However Rewilding Spain may have the answer!
They have introduced a herd of wild horses to the Iberian Highlands. Przewalski's horses went extinct in the wild in Europe and Asia and bringing them back could be a huge advantage. They eat a LOT of grass and leaves from the local trees. This has the benefit of reducing the volume of vegetation that could be set alight and help to slow wildfires.

It's not just lowering the impact of wildfires, these amazing horses will help to encourage further biodiversity. As they graze on the land they create half-wooded landscapes which will encourage vultures and even the Iberian Lynx.
This rewilding scheme will cover an area over five times the size of Greater London! As people have moved away to cities, the area has become much less densely populated, allowing nature to thrive. There is also a benefit of a regenerated rural economy as responsible tourism can encourage people to visit the region.
We look forward to seeing how this incredible 20-year project develops and the positive impact it has on the local area as well as being a case study for further areas around the world.
