Cue the Capybaras!

Michelle Parkes ·

Say hello to the largest rodent in the world, the capybara! Like an enormous guinea pig, they happily roam large parts of South America. Let's find out some fun facts about these very cute creatures!

1. They love swimming!

They love living near the water as it allows them to escape any predators like eagles and anacondas.

They have webbed feet that help them swim and then can even spend up to 5 minutes underwater. They love a nap in the rivers to cool down during the heat of the day.

2. Their teeth don't stop growing!

A bit like rabbits, their teeth just keep growing. They love munching on tough aquatic plants and grasses which can be very tough on their teeth!

3. Capybaras have LOTS of friends!

You'll often see a capybara being used like furniture by numerous other animals such as birds and monkeys. Their sociable nature means they have a symbiotic relationship with other animals and also protects them from predators.

4. They eat their own poo!!

Breakfast for a capybara is their own poo! This is when their poop has lots of protein in it from digesting yesterday's food. The grasses they love to eat are very hard to digest - so they just eat it twice!
