Learn about how Dubai has transformed into a city of the future!

City of the Future

Dubai!

Let’s learn all about Dubai and why it’s a city of the future!

Learn about the AMAZING buildings!

Find out about Global Goal 9: Innovation, Industry and Infrastructure

From desert to city!

Did you know that Dubai was once a small fishing village and nearly ALL DESERT.
It has transformed into a HUGE city with over 3 million people that live there.

It’s home to incredible buildings, the TALLEST building in the world, the Burj Khalifa.

Dubai has mountains in the East and a dry desert with rolling sand dunes in the centre.
It sits next to the Persian Gulf sea.

Dubai is hot!

Dubai has a HOT desert climate.

In summer there is an average temperature of 41 °C (106 °F).

Question time!

How do things grow in a desert?

How do animals survive?

How can you build in the desert?

Global Goals

There are 17 things to do on the Global Goals list!

Global Goal 9  - Innovation, Industry and Infrastructure.

How did Dubai change from desert land to a HUGE city of the future?
It is known for being a leading city of innovation!

Do you know the meaning of these words?

Innovation
Industry
Infrastructure

Innovation

Innovation

A new idea or way of doing things!

Industry

Industry

An industry is a group of businesses that make or sell products or perform services.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure

Infrastructure is the term used to describe things which support modern human life.

For example, water supply, sewage plants, housing, roads, bridges, railways!

How Dubai found water!

Dubai has hardly any rain and natural sources of water, like rivers. Dubai’s engineers have had to be very INNOVATIVE!

A city needs water for people to drink and crops to grow.

Desalination plants provide almost ALL of Dubai's water resources.

The Desalination plant removes all the salt and things we don’t need from seawater.

That means it is safe to drink.

Innovation and building in the desert!

Dubai has some of the TALLEST skyscrapers in the world.

In fact, the Burj Khalifa is the TALLEST skyscraper in the world, it’s twice the size of the Empire State Building and three times the size of the Eiffel Tower.

BUT… How do these HUGE skyscrapers not sink into the sand?

Skyscrapers are usually built on solid ground. Underneath there is a solid rock foundation, this supports the weight of the building.

Solid foundations are very important.

Engineers drill deep into the bedrock below Dubai.

They make long, deep pillars of concrete and steel for strong foundations.

Dubai’s islands

Dubai’s islands

Dubai has many innovative building projects.
One example being its man made Islands!

The islands were made with sand and large amounts of rock.

These materials were then built up to form the islands.

Amazing you have learned about Global Goal 9!

Innovation, Industry and Infrastructure in Dubai.
As a class, continue to research about Dubai’s buildings and geography.

Can you make a brochure telling people why they should visit?
