Plastic Pollution

Learn about plastic pollution with Polly the Pufferfish!

Plastic Pollution

What is Plastic Pollution?

Plastic is a man-made material that is used to make lots of important things.

Plastic bottles can carry clean drinking water to people that really need it!

We use more plastic than we need, and lots of plastic items are single-use plastic.

Single-use plastic is designed to be used once and then thrown away.

How does plastic waste get into the ocean?

Ocean dumping is when waste is illegally tipped directly into the ocean.

80% plastic in the ocean comes from the land.

Rubbish can get to the ocean through drains.

Clothes contain microfibres, tiny plastic fibres they can enter our water systems through washing machines and eventually end up in the ocean.

Microbeads are found in many bathroom products.

These are tiny bits of plastic that end up in our oceans.

The U.K government has banned microbeads but they are still used in other countries around the world.

What are the effects of plastic pollution?

Plastic waste is so dangerous for ocean creatures!

They can become tangled, caught up or even eat plastic.

When plastic breaks down it gets smaller and smaller.

This can be eaten by fish which is then eaten by humans.

What do you think about plastic pollution?

Debate plastic! Imagine you are:
A planet saver, a shopkeeper, a customer, a factory owner.

Think about all these different points of view!

A planet saver

You live in the City of London. You love walking through parks and enjoying nature. Seeing plastic waste and rubbish on the ground really upsets you. It is harming wildlife and spoiling the environment.

A shopkeeper

You have lots of items with plastic packaging. You care about the environment but changing the packaging would be very costly. You can’t afford to change the products.

A customer

You always take a reusable bag to the supermarket. You feel responsible for your impact on the planet. You avoid plastic packaging and don’t understand why people buy more plastic bags.

A factory owner

You feel that there isn’t a problem with plastic packaging. It’s cheaper for customers to buy products and it is very hygienic.
