Top Presenting Tips for Volunteers!

Volunteering is AWESOME!

Thank you for giving up your time to bring Earth Cubs into schools.

Let's check out some top tips!

Connect with the school

Arrange a date and time

Make sure the school has a computer, internet, a screen and sound

Always arrive a bit earlier to check it all out!

Preparation is key!

Look through the content in advance so you're familiar with it

Practice going through the presentation

Think of some fun facts to bring in too!

Introduce yourself

Always start by introducing yourself!

Kids will love to know where you're from and what you do.

Use your voice

Think about the pace and intonation and pour your energy into it.

Channel your inner TV presenter!

Keep calm and carry on!

If you make a mistake, don’t worry!

Unpredictable things can happen, just go with it, wait for calm then carry on!

Read the room

If everyone is talking, wait. Don’t fight to be heard.

If the children are excited and loud, a hand signal will demonstrate you are waiting for everyone to listen.

Teachers are always on hand to help.

Listen!

Listen to children’s opinions and comment on them, e.g. "That’s a great example of renewable energy!"

If they don’t answer correctly, value their participation e.g. "Well done for your answer!"

You need to create a safe space where children feel encouraged to have a go!

Ask questions

Direct your questions to different areas of the room.

Ask different year groups to put their hands up, so you can have more challenging questions directed at them.

Questions are a great way to engage with your audience and you can even ask the children to explain why they think something.

Make the session your own

We have LOADS of amazing presentations and activities you can use.

If you have additional knowledge on the topic, share your experience!

Kids love stories!

Be prepared!

Have your login and password ready to access Earth Cubs.

If you need materials for a classroom activity session make sure you bring it with you.

Timing

Most assemblies are around 20 minutes.

Aim to present for around 15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions.

If you're running a classroom session, times may vary depending on your activity.

Finally, SMILE and have fun!
