What are Invasive Species?

Learn about the incredible Galápagos and how education can be used to help!

What are Invasive Species?

Invasive Species

Invasive species are animals, plants or even fungi that live outside their native area.

This subsequently disrupts the local ecosystems. These species usually have the ability to grow quickly, causing harm. These can be introduced accidentally or deliberately.

Endemic

Invasive species are a concern for the Islands of the Galápagos because they have so many species that are endemic.

This makes them incredibly vulnerable and could even become extinct.

Goats

Goats have caused problems for other animals.

They eat a lot of foods that the giant tortoises and iguanas need.

Rats!

Rats eat turtle eggs and plants that are important food for many creatures.

Can you find out about the Philornis Downsi? What is it? How does it have an impact on the Galápagos?

Controlling Invasive Species

Charities such as Galápagos Conservation Trust on the islands are working hard to control the invasive species and stop further species from entering.

They even scan visitors' bags when they arrive!

Restoration!

We need to protect vulnerable ecosystems found on the Galápagos Islands by conserving species and restoring habitats.

It is also important to educate people that live there about sustainable solutions. So many AMAZING charities have projects that help to repopulate and re-wild precious ecosystems and save endangered species.

Plants

People are only allowed to live in small areas of the island, so that the wildlife and plants are protected.

Giant Tortoises

Giant tortoises are protected on the islands, to make sure they do not become extinct.

Pink Iguanas

Pink Iguanas are protected on the islands.

Only one juvenile has ever been found. There is a massive decline due to predation of eggs, and hatchlings by invasive rats and cats.

Research challenge!

Can you find out more about invasive species and restoration projects in the Galápagos?

How will you present your learning?
